Injustice?!

So I have been thinking about injustice. With all the earth quakes and tsunami's and famine and unfair stuff in the world I am trying to figure this stuff out and what our response as Christians should be.
Intitially my thinking of sending money and praying seemed to be enough because I really can't go anywhere at this point. However, looking at Jesus life and how he responded to injustices of his day, that seems kind of weak. I also think there is injustice that happens right here arounbd us in our own conutry. Maybe no natural disasters killing thousands of people but injustice happens here as well. Starving, poor and helpless people live in our neighborhoods. So what is our response? What do we do about this injustice or do I not fully understand injustice? Is it only disasters and grand scale death or lose? Is it easier and less personal if we can send money to some agancy?
Well, just some thoughts from reading other posts on God's judgement and wrath and studying injustice. Be interetsed to hear some comments.

peace out

  • You know Mark you are on to something here. i mean why is that every time churches suggest service projects it's either the soup kitchen or foreign projects or money...
...well i think it is way too easy for us to do that - becuase it keeps the ugly painful stuff at arms length. We aren't vey interested in letting injustice affect us personally. You know why don't we all have homeless people living in our basements on the road to recovery. Or pick up hitchhikers habitually (which you have been a great example to me on. And by the way i think that youth workers are on the frontlines of injustice by the very fact that we are working with teens. youth are being denied the justice of a healthy family to grow up in and we can help them. So yeah i guess we can so easily get distracted by death and distruction when it's physical and immediate but we seem not to be too concerned about the death and distruction that is happenign in people's hearts in our own backyard.

  • I have been thinking a lot about the same things. What are we supposed to do? When Jesus saw stuff like this the Bible says his heart went out to them, he had compassion.

When Katrina was happening I got so sick of the media complaining about how poor the response was. I thought if they would stop complaining and actually coordinate a response it could have been very different. Then I realized my "holier then thou" side was coming through and I was challenged in my own heart to do something. Sending money and praying is essential, but way too easy. So you want to go to New Orleans? Can you? Do you have time? Of course we do, we just don't do it. Our Church is going to try to go.

It's the same with what we do here. We see that there is a big need in youth, so we hire a youth pastor, then we don't have to worry about it or sacrifice our own time and energy. I think we just have too much money, and we think it can solve all the problems. I challenged our Jr. Highs to have compassion like Jesus, but what they wanted to do was send money through WorldVision. "That's great" I said, "but what about the kid at school that nobody likes, can't we have compassion on him or her?" Their response was classic, "well, if she would shower once in a while, and if she wasn't so rude to us...then I would be her friend." Where do they learn this stuff? From us of course, we send our money to the stinky parts of the world, but we don't get our oen hands dirty. We are the perpetrators of injustice!

  • Thanks Dale and Trev!! Those are both at the heart of what I am trying to say. We have injustice going on in our own communities. What are we doing? We possibly are being conduits of justice and if that's the case keep on!! If we aren't, Lets start!!
